In South Florida, one nonprofit is helping to solve two problems at once, removing invasive Burmese pythons and training veterans to do so. Veterans with Swamp Apes are heading into the Everglades to remove the invasive snakes and, in the process, some are finding structure, service, and a renewed sense of purpose after military life.

Burmese pythons are scarcely recorded in Lee County, but experts say the data is a faulty reflection of the invasive species' actual population.

Florida scientists used female Burmese pythons as live lures to find invasive males in the Everglades, but 3 million camera-trap photos produced only four python detections.
